Qualitative Properties of Ionic Flows via Poisson-nernst-planck Systems with Bikerman’s Local Hard-sphere Potential: Ion Size Effects
نویسندگان
چکیده
We study a quasi-one-dimensional steady-state Poisson-NernstPlanck model for ionic flows through membrane channels with fixed boundary ion concentrations and electric potentials. We consider two ion species, one positively charged and one negatively charged, and assume zero permanent charge. Bikerman’s local hard-sphere potential is included in the model to account for ion size effects on the ionic flow. The model problem is treated as a boundary value problem of a singularly perturbed differential system. Our analysis is based on the geometric singular perturbation theory but, most importantly, on specific structures of this concrete model. The existence of solutions to the boundary value problem for small ion sizes is established and, treating the ion sizes as small parameters, we also derive approximations of individual fluxes and I-V (current-voltage) relations, from which qualitative properties of ionic flows related to ion sizes are studied. A detailed characterization of complicated interactions among multiple and physically crucial parameters for ionic flows, such as boundary concentrations and potentials, diffusion coefficients and ion sizes, is provided.

Ion Size and Valence Effects on Ionic Flows via Poisson-nernst-planck Models
We study boundary value problems of a quasi-one-dimensional steady-state PoissonNernst-Planck model with a local hard-sphere potential for ionic flows of two oppositely charged ion species through an ion channel, focusing on effects of ion sizes and ion valences. The flow properties of interest, individual fluxes and total flow rates of the mixture, depend on multiple physical parameters such a...

We consider two ion species, one positively charged and one negatively charged, and assume zero permanent charge. A local hard-sphere potential that depends pointwise on ion concentrations is ...

We consider a one-dimensional steady-state Poisson-Nernst-Planck type model for ionic flow through membrane channels. Improving the classical Poisson-Nernst-Planck models where ion species are treated as point charges, this model includes ionic interaction due to finite sizes of ion species modeled by hard sphere potential from the Density Functional Theory. The resulting problem is a singularl...

In this work, we analyze a one-dimensional steady-state Poisson-Nernst-Planck type model for ionic flow through a membrane channel including ionic interactions modeled from the Density Functional Theory in a simple setting: Two oppositely charged ion species are involved with electroneutrality boundary conditions and with zero permanent charge, and only the hard sphere component of the excess (...
متن کاملReversal permanent charge and reversal potential: case studies via classical Poisson-Nernst-Planck models
In this work, we are interested in effects of a simple profile of permanent charges on ionic flows. We determine when a permanent charge produces current reversal. We adopt the classical Poisson-NernstPlanck models of ionic flows for this study. The starting point of our analysis is the recently developed geometric singular perturbation approach for Poisson-Nernst-Planck models. Under the setti...
